Any of this sound familiar when it comes to self-care?
“I just don’t know why I don’t do things that I know I should”
“I don’t have a problem scheduling self-care, but there’s a part of me that keeps looking to distract myself with other things”
“What started off as an enjoyable self-care activity, becomes exhausting and I end up quitting.”
Or perhaps, the voice inside your head really isn’t that kind or caring in how it tries to get you to maintain commitments to self care and the irony isn’t lost on you!
The problem is pretty clear, people can have challenges doing things that they know and even want to be doing, but don’t!
The answer? Not so clear!
For many people, it isn’t a lack of knowledge or information about what they want to be eating, or doing (whether that be some exercise routine, meditation, etc.). Some jump from program to program hoping that a new technique or program will be the answer. Some have given up trying.
But have you really explored why? Why is it hard to do the things that you know you “should” do? And not just based on some social science theory. Or any other theory. But your unique reason why. Have you explored the parts of you that keep “sabotaging” your self care efforts with open-hearted curiosity?
If you haven’t, you may be interested in the next group that I am offering, “An Internal Family Systems (IFS) approach to Self care.”
IFS is an evidenced-based psychotherapy. It’s based on the notion that we are made up of parts.
We will be exploring your unique system of parts with regards to self care. Which parts of you show up in relationship to caring for yourself?
IFS also is based on the notion that we also have a Self. The Self is present in all of us and it's been called by esoteric spiritual traditions different things: the Soul, Buddha Nature, and God within to name but a few. It's identified by qualities such as love, compassion, curiosity, presence, wholeness and wisdom.
We will be exploring capital “S” Self care, self care that comes from your Self. Based on 5 Element theory in Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are 5 foundational aspects to the Self: intention, body wisdom, courage, meaning and purpose, and connection. Each has it’s own way of supporting genuine Self care.
◦ Small group format (6 participants), online via Zoom.
◦ In depth exploration of your own parts / system as it relates to self care through meditations, dyads and other group processes.
◦ Weekly group check-in dedicated to supporting one another with your chosen self-care focus over the 8 weeks.
◦ Exploring and utilizing the 5 facets to capital “S” Self care based on 5 element theory from Traditional Chinese Medicine.
◦ Each of the 6 participants will also be the focus of an in-depth “group sculpting” process facilitated by Dr. Chee that is intended to leverage the power of the group for healing burdens related to caring for one self (or others) in a safe and sacred manner.
Dr. Steve Chee is an Integrative East-West Medicine Physician that has been in practice for over 20 years. He is also a Certified IFS Therapist. His clinical practice focuses on bridging the gap between what is happening physically and psycho-spiritually; helping people to address root causes of “dis-ease.” He also served as faculty at the University of Santa Monica’s spiritual psychology program for 10 years where he worked with students in designing and implementing an individualized “radiant health & well-being program.”
Dr. Chee has designed this group program because the one activity that impacts our health the most is our ability to care for ourselves. Ironically, self care is also the one thing that usually gets sacrificed first under stress. And he has found that many people haven’t really explored their relationship with self care. It’s not something people think about! He also found that the healing that lies within one’s relationship to caring for one self can be very transformational.
Dr. Chee has his own experience of burning out as a physician . His own journey of healing informs his very gentle and compassionate approach and helping others on their Self care path is truly one of his life's joys.
